No Bongo Cat for Gameboy
This is my seventh game released on Itch.io.
WHAT IS IT?
No Bongo Cat is a rhythm game, based on Bongo Cat, without any bongos. Hit the beats with paws using left, right, A, and B. Try desperately to avoid the rhythm of the music because I failed most of the time to get the timing correct in the finished game (think of it as added difficulty. If you can achieve near-perfect timing, you will earn one of 7 rewards.
WHY ON EARTH DID I MAKE THIS?
This game started life originally as a Nyan Cat game, which failed, as I couldn't get my head around making a rainbow and a cat animate at the same time. I spent so much time creating the music for the game, I felt it would be a waste to throw it out, so it became the soundtrack for this game. At the same time, I was toying around with making a Bonjo Cat soundboard, and the two projects became one.
WHAT I LEARNT (WHAT WENT WRONG)?
This game really drove me crazy... There are limits on how many sprites GB Studio can have on screen at the same time, and at some points, a few of the beat markers do glitch. I couldn't think of an easy, time-efficient way around this, and so the beats are limited to a maximum of 4 on the screen at any one time. This problem was tied to the fact that I used music triggers to activate the beats, of which there can only be 4. It slightly limited how many beats I could dispatch toward the cat during the music.
If I were to start over the game again, I would probably try and find a different way to tie the music and beat together, as there are some timing issues. Maybe use tile switching to animate the beats, to increase the number on screen at the same time.
IMPROVEMENTS AND ADDITIONS.
In the future, I may revisit this project and add more music and achievements. But in truth, the game is playable and quite fun. The game is beatable, and I have twice achieved perfect scores. I found hitting the beat slightly before it reaches the hotspot works (which, I know, slightly makes the beats redundant). In the future, after some consideration, I may make the music track shorter; it's pretty long, though it would need me to rework the achievement and beat timings, and I'm not sure I have the patience at the moment.
THANKS
Once again, thank you to anyone who has purchased a game from me and to anyone who just comes and takes a look. I really am proud to have so many people take an interest in my creations.
If I have brought a smile to your face or you appreciate the effort I have made in making these games, please think about purchasing the ROM and in turn support future projects.
By the way, the game is AI-free; however, I can't draw, and so the cover was generated by ChatGPT. I have no problems with AI, but I understand some people do.
Purchase
In order to download this game you must purchase it at or above the minimum price of $1 USD. You will get access to the following files:
